What Happened On

July 17th, 2024

As Taken From Greenfield Record Article:

CONWAY — For more than half a century, Baker’s Country Store has sat on River Street, where it has offered fresh baked goods, pumped gas and served as the unofficial town gathering spot for residents.

It’s survived countless snowstorms, the 2017 tornado and even the torrential downpours that plagued the town last year. Its future, though, is now in doubt after a July 17 rainstorm dumped upwards of 2 inches of rain on the town in an hour, which overwhelmed the catch basin above the store and sent water flowing over the 6-inch berm the Bakers had constructed, severely damaging the embankment, crushing the septic tank and washing away part of the parking lot.

With tens of thousands, if not more than $100,000 in damages, owner Helen Baker and her husband, Fire Chief Robert Baker, are facing the reality that they may need to close the family business.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do. I really don’t,” said Helen Baker, who bought the store from her mom in 1985 and has worked there since 1972. She added she has never faced a weather event like this before. “Even during the tornado, I stayed open through the whole thing.”

Due to the septic tank damage, the store has no bathrooms and Baker’s Country Store can no longer sell fuel because a Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection representative advised them that the 2,000-gallon tank is at risk of damage. Fuel sales, Helen Baker added, account for about half of the store’s income.

After the flooding, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation upgraded the catch basin on Route 116 and the Bakers have had several conversations with the agency. Due to the damage being caused by an unusually severe storm and not MassDOT’s action or inaction, it does not have the responsibility to repair the damage. The state’s right-of-way, according to Robert Baker, stops several feet before where the damage occurred on their property.

No previous damage complaints have been logged to MassDOT at the location.

What is going on right now

As of the first week of September the Baker's continue to have no solution in sight and are facing closing down potentially for good if they can't find a way to make the needed repairs. The state continues to not provide any support in the cost of the repairs nor to take responsibility for the damage caused by an over run storm drain. The Go Fund Me that was started by concerned residents has raised a little over $20,000 to date which will not come close to cover the cost of the repairs and lost business from the loss of fuel sales and in store sales.

As of the 2nd week of September the Bakers have received three bids for the repairs which upon detailed review it is expected that the repairs will cost between $60,000 and $70,000.

Why Conway & The Baker's Need Your Help

Helen Baker has worked in & owned and operated Baker's Country Store for over 50 years. Baker's remains the only place in town to get any grocery items, a cup of coffee, baked goods, a burger, breakfast, a gallon of milk, and much more. It is also the heart of Conway. It's where memories around the community tables have been shared and made for generations. It's where fire calls used to ring first. It's where if you were looking for someone in town you would call to find them. It's where everything going on in town was shared and where so many families needing help got help.

As many small business owners will understand owning and operating a country store like this is a labor of love and not of profit. Helen Baker has put her life into this store for closer to 50 years and has done so because it has been her family. It has brought her plenty of joy in her life but not made her wealthy by any means. She has run it day to day and Covid nearly brought her to closing it down however she refused to quit and close the store down for the community that needed it. She quite simply does not have the means necessary for the needed repairs. She could have viewed this as a sign to just hang up the towel but she very much wants to find a way to get the repairs done so she can remain open long in enough to in the next few years find someone to carry on this small town tradition so she can in the not to distant future retire.

It is clear that if the store were to close now and these repairs not be done it would likely never re open and a piece of Conway history and a much needed Conway resource would be gone forever.

It is for this reason that Helen, Bob, her family, friends, and the residents of Conway ask for your help in keeping Baker's Country Store alive.
